Vienna, Austria (May 2007)

When we arrived in Vienna, the temperature was hovering around 18 to 28 degrees despite being spring (which should be cooler). We reckoned summer has come slightly too early. :p The good thing is that the air is relatively dry, so we don't feel sticky like we do in Singapore. In Austria the main language spoken in German, which means we are at a loss when it comes to communication. Thankfully, in the city, most of the people know a little English so we could get by quite adequately with basic requests and movement around.

Since this is the beginning of our Europe trip, here's a quick summary: Our trip covers Vienna (13 to 15 May), Bratislava (16 May), Krems (17 May), Salzburg (18 to 22 May), Cesky Krumlov (23 & 24 May) and Prague (24 to 28 May). This album will cover both Vienna and Krems, a town not too far away from Vienna.

Parliament was one of the first few places we visited. This was because during our "recee" tram ride around the ring road of Vienna, we were attracted to the large building and plenty of space in front of the buidling plus the glittering gold on the statue in front of the parliament.

The fountain statue at the front of the building was created by Karl Kundemann and represents Pallas Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom.

I liked this! A whole row of "soldiers" lining out on the roof of the parliament building. Looks like those little figures in the "Night At The Museum" movie. :)

With the sun coming out and the pleasant 20+ degree celcius temperature, a group of sun-lovers lay in their sun chairs placed in a "sand box" along the river. Innovative idea since Austria is land-locked and not near any sea.

The interior of this church is adorned with figures and quite elaborately decorated. Visitors to this church come in big groups, but noise level in here is thankfully kept low.

This view is taken from the behind (just after the main door). It is actually dimmer in here than the photo is showing; it was deliberately slightly overexposed so that the light from the windows "streams" into the entire interior of this place for a more dramatic effect.

The smoke from the candles and strong sunlight shining through the window panes created streams of light from the top left down onto the walkway of the church.

The soot accumulated over centuries has been removed in recent years, changing its colour from black to white, that's why you see some parts are darker than the rest. :)

The Pestaule Column. An inscription which said "Deo Filio Redemptor". I think it means "God (Christ) the redeemer" as this column was used to remember deliverance of the city from the black death plague in the 17th Century.

A photo of the Hofburg imperial palace (Michaelerplatz, Hofburg). The sun was coming from behind the building - bad timing. It was a tough time exposing the shadows, and hence you might see banding of the sky after a quick post processing.
