Aquarium

This album contains photos of my aquarium at my home. It is a two feet aquarium. Although it would be good to have a 4 feet (i.e. 1.2m length aquarium) or larger for easier management of fish and plants, my kitchen layout and furnishing, does not permit this. However, I still like to make the aquarium beautiful for viewing and relaxation. The key objectives for the aquarium are: it must be easy to maintenance, pleasing to the eye, and good for the fish. I am still learning in this hobbies in my available free time as a form of recreation.

October, 2004. This tank was created out of coarse mixed stones substrate. Main plants are Java Fern & Nana Anubias. The substrate is not the best because I realise it allows debris to be trapped in the layers easily. But cleaning this substrate is a nightmare. No aqua soil is used as it mainly plants tied to driftwood.

December, 2004. Changed the substrate to white sand (mixed with white shell-like grains). This substrate proved to be not good too. The problem is that being white, it is very reflective, and my fish don't seemed to like the substrate very much. Still predominantly Nana and Java Ferns. Added Crypts on the right, and Java Moss on the two V shape background driftwood.

February, 2005. White substrate remain. Added Water Sprite on the left, and unidentified plant on the right from LFS. Added stone ornament on the 2/3 right. Substrate not suitable for unknown plant, but water sprite survived.

March, 2005. Added Amazon sword to test the 'light level suitability' of my aquarium. Apparently, not successful. The sword did not make it and struggled. Suspected that substrate need revamping as it did not provide a suitable place for roots to grow and take good base.

May, 2005. Added soil substrate, remove all plants to add substrate. Added a "cabomba-like" plant and also hydrilla for testing. Hydrilla grew very well, but grew very fast and it become a management nightmare. Cutting every 3 days or so. Cabomba-plant also grew very fast. Maintenance for excess leaves and cutting is high. Not the way to go.

November, 2005. Crypt on the right doing well and growing. Currently no good candidate for filling the top middle ground. Java Fern growing gloriously nice in the centre, like a glacier sliding down on the gravel. Hair grass on the right, and Glasso on the foreground in testing mode. Added Dwarf catfish to handle

Feburary, 2006. Revamped tank as the ferns grow a little too much. Cleaned tank of waste hidden under fern (could be the caused of algae). Cleaner look now.
